| In
Western Mecklenburg, in the middle of the landscape characterized by hills
and lakes, 11 miles from the state capital Schwerin, lies the beautiful
recreation area of the village Dümmer with its 4.4 mile long lake. 1600
people live in the community. The name "Dümmer" derives from the Slavic name "domare" which means "those from the glorious house (dom=house)". The oldest documentary mention is in the "Ratzeburger Zehntregister" from 1230. At that point in history Dümmer consisted of 10 farms along the lake. At the beginning of the 20th century post offices and a dairy were built in Dümmer. In 1913 "Kunstchaussee" road from Schwerin to Wahlsmühlen Hof was finished, in 1926 Dümmer had electricity. With the camping site on the south side of Lake Dümmer that was opened in 1968 on the edge of a small forest, tourism started booming. The landscape with its variety of plants and animals became a center of attraction for those loving nature and for those looking for a place to relax. The excellent swimming and hiking opportunities in this beautiful and peaceful area near Schwerin still attract many tourists. In
recent years Dümmer's infrastructure has changed a lot. A new center of
the village with various shops, a community house with a daycare, two
hotels and several new houses were built. Dümmer is a nice town to live
in and a very nice location for relaxation as well. You will have a really great time if you decide to stay in one of the two hotels "Ossenkopp" and "Vogelgarten". A lot of events are held in the Hotel Ossenkopp, whereas the hotel "Vogelgarten" has a very nice fitness studio and wellness area. |
