| Schwerin is the second
largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and also the old residential seat
of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
regional assembly and many other state departments and institutions are
based here. The Schwerin Chateau, lying on an island in Lake Schwerin is one of the most notable historic buildings in Germany and an irresistible tourist attraction as is the Schwerin Cathedral, a fine example of Gothic brick architecture. The representative Classicist buildings such as the Regional Museum, the Alte Palais, the Marstall, the State Theatre and the Arsenal are all worth visiting, as are the Market Place, the Old Town, the many museums and the general cultural programme. Visit the Schwerin Casino if you want to have fun and excitement. The excellent shopping facilities are appreciated by tourists and local people alike. Its superb setting on the southwest banks of Lake Schwerin and the surrounding countryside with its countless woods and lakes make the "city of the seven lakes and forests" well worth a visit. Experience the countryside during a trip by ship from Weisse Flotte. Culinary specials and an unique view over the city with the lakes can be enjoyed by guests and local people from the Schweriner Fernsehturm (TV Tower Schwerin). |
